Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
July 31, 2010"Scott Pilgrim" is another genius turn in Wright's career and filmography, made even more impressive by how impossible this task must have seemed from the offset. It's destined to become a beloved classic among the under-30 ADD generation whose lives have been intrinsically linked to MTV and video games. And who knows? Possibly even a few open-minded older folks as well.
Salt
July 31, 2010There are moments of well-crafted thrills in "Salt" and Jolie reliably carries them off, but the desire of the filmmakers to put off thinking about the finale until they absolutely had to produces a hollow lack of satisfaction instead of the thunderous catharsis they're looking for. You could make a case that it is an excellent example of the kind of film it is, but it's nothing more than that.
Inception
July 31, 2010Compared to most of this year's releases, "Inception" should still impress and, at the very least, inspire some worthwhile discussion, but it's hardly the heady blockbuster summertime savior that audiences have been waiting for.
Inception
July 31, 2010While this may not be Christopher Nolan's most immediately accessible movie--it actually requires you to pay attention and use your brain yes, in the summer--it's certainly his most personal and most daring film, the type of summer movie that leaves you thinking well after it's over, immediately wanting to see it again in case you missed anything the first time.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
July 31, 2010I'm not asking for deep philosophy or character development, but something besides perfunctory plot development is needed or else you just get something hollow. "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is hollow.
Despicable Me
July 31, 2010A good vocal performance by Steve Carrell and a few gags work, which is about all that saves it from the junk pile, but not by much.
Predators
July 31, 2010If you're a fan of the original "Predator," then Nimród Antal's movie makes for a far more satisfying sequel than the weak 1990 follow-up or any of the "AvP" movies, maybe because it makes more of an effort to create the vibe and tension that worked so well in the original.
The Last Airbender
July 31, 2010While "The Last Airbender" is a great looking film that will entertain kids, problems with the script and acting make this a movie that adults will likely be bored with.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
July 31, 2010It's not a great piece of filmmaking, but it's competent and entertaining and only rarely silly and considering the hole the series has been in, that's quite a feat.
Grown Ups
July 31, 2010While not the worst movie any of this cast have done, it's far from their best work either, the results being a semi-funny "This is Your Life, Adam Sandler " where the sum of the parts rarely achieves anything as funny as Sandler might have done on his own.
